Workforce Heroes

We love hearing your stories and today we share one from Donna. Inspired by our celebration of American workers, she sent us this story of her family.

My workforce heroes are my husband and the other American farmers like him. They work long days and are on call 24-hrs. a day with very minimal pay and no overtime. Their jobs are dangerous: corn pickers, hay bines, silos, cattle, etc., have caused many losses of life and limb. They are seldom (if ever) able to take a day off or go on a vacation and they are under-appreciated by the public whose mouths they feed.

We are very fortunate that food prices in this country are comparatively low (yes, believe it!) compared to other countries. But, this comes at a cost to those few who break their backs, ruin their knees, and work tirelessly to produce our food.

The American farmer is a dying breed–likely due to the hard work and low pay. We need them to be profitable, to stay in business, and to produce for our ever-increasing population.

Here’s to them, one and all: American farmers, I thank you and salute you!
